On the direction of the current administration, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) has chosen to rewrite the Personal Data Protection Bill.
ProPakistani was informed by sources that the updated draught of the Personal Data Protection Bill 2021, which has already been accepted, will be finished in a few weeks.
It is important to remember that the Personal Data Protection Bill 2021 was agreed by the cabinet in February 2022, but it was not brought up for discussion and approval in the National Assembly when Imran Khan was the previous prime minister.
Any person or government that processes, has control over, or allows the processing of any personal data is covered by the bill’s scope and application, so long as the data controller or processor is based in Pakistan or otherwise physically present there.
It also applies to those whose controller or processor is operating in Pakistan digitally or otherwise, but is incorporated elsewhere and engaged in commercial or noncommercial activities in Pakistan.
The bill states that no personal information may be disclosed for any reason other than “the purpose for which the personal data was to be disclosed at the time the personal data was collected; or a purpose directly related to the purpose referred to in subparagraph” without the consent of the data subject.
