Pakistan Railways has attracted Bangladesh’s attention for the supply of freight wagons and passenger coaches. This interest comes after Pakistan offered rolling stock at lower prices compared to other regional suppliers. The move highlights growing cooperation between the two countries and positions Pakistan as a cost-effective manufacturing hub in South Asia.
Delegation Visits Pakistan Railways
A two-member Bangladeshi delegation visited Pakistan Railways recently. The delegation included Farhad Islam, Secretary for International Organisations and D-8 Commissioner, and High Commissioner Mohammad Iqbal Hussain Khan.
The visitors toured Pakistan Railways’ carriage factory in Islamabad and the historic Mughalpura Workshop in Lahore. They were briefed on the technical capabilities, production process, and ongoing rolling stock projects. A documentary presentation showed how workshops have been modernised and highlighted the country’s ability to produce coaches and wagons locally.
Pakistan Railways’ Expertise
Chief Mechanical Engineer Muhammad Nasir Khalili explained Pakistan Railways’ skills in coach and wagon manufacturing, locomotive rehabilitation, and maintenance. He stated that the modern facilities now meet international standards, making Pakistan a strong competitor in the regional market.
Positive Remarks from Bangladesh
Farhad Islam said the visit was informative and encouraging. He described it as a clear sign of strengthening friendship and cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh. Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi welcomed Bangladesh’s interest and confirmed Pakistan’s commitment to growing railway-to-railway partnerships for mutual economic benefits.
Bangladesh’s Considerations
Bangladesh previously sourced rolling stock from India. However, Pakistan now appears to be a more cost-effective alternative. Bangladeshi experts are expected to visit Pakistan for a detailed technical evaluation before finalising any deals.
Pakistan’s Track Record
Pakistan Railways has a long history of exporting rolling stock. The country has supplied coaches and wagons to Sri Lanka, Nepal, Chile, and Argentina, and even exported to Bangladesh in the 1980s. Officials say the renewed interest from Dhaka reflects Pakistan’s growing reputation as a competitive supplier in the region.
Rolling Stock Comparison Table
| Feature | Pakistan Railways | Other Regional Suppliers |
|---|---|---|
| Freight Wagons Price | Competitive | Higher |
| Passenger Coaches Price | Competitive | Higher |
| Manufacturing Capacity | Modern, large-scale | Limited |
| Export History | Sri Lanka, Nepal, Chile, Argentina | Limited |
| Technical Evaluation Support | Provided | Varies |
The growing cooperation signals that Pakistan could become a key regional hub for rolling stock exports, benefiting both countries economically and strengthening railway ties.
