Since Apple created iPadOS and separated its tablet software from its iOS phone software, both have received updates at the same time. But, if a new report from “people with knowledge of the matter” is correct, that could all change next month.
According to reports, Apple intends to delay the release of iPadOS 16 by about a month compared to iOS 16. The latter would arrive in September, as is customary for a new iOS release, while iPadOS 16 would not arrive until October.
The new Stage Manager multitasking system built into iPadOS 16 is taking longer to develop than expected.
During the ongoing beta testing phase of the new software, some developers criticized Stage Manager for being buggy and confusing, in addition to not being compatible with the majority of iPads on the market.
The delayed release of iPadOS 16 will also bring it closer to the release of new iPads, which is expected in October. An iPad Pro with the M2 chip will be released, as well as a faster entry-level iPad with a USB-C port.
