Apple Extends Support to Older iPhones, iPhone 5s Updated After 13 Years

Apple has once again surprised its loyal users by releasing an update for very old iPhones. Even after many years, the company continues to ensure these devices work properly. Along with iOS 26.2.1 for newer phones, Apple quietly rolled out iOS 12.5.8 for devices still running iOS 12. This update comes almost eight years after iOS 12 was first released, showing Apple’s long-standing approach to device care.

iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 Get New Life

The update is available for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6. These phones were launched in September 2013 and September 2014. That means Apple is extending support for the iPhone 5s after 13 years and the iPhone 6 after 12 years. With iOS 12.5.8, important features like iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation will keep working smoothly until at least January 2027.

Why This Update Matters

Apple explained that this update extends a special security certificate. This certificate is needed for core services to function. Without this fix, some features could have stopped working once the certificate expired. Thanks to this update, users can continue using their older iPhones without sudden service issues.

Apple’s History of Extended Updates

Before this release, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 last received updates in January 2023 to fix serious security problems. Apple usually promises five years of updates, but it often delivers far more. For example, the iPhone 6s, released 11 years ago, received a security update in September 2025 and now also gets iOS 15.8.6 with the same certificate extension.

Support for Old and New Devices

At the same time, Apple released updates for iOS 18 and iOS 16. This shows a careful balance between supporting the newest devices while respecting users who still rely on older iPhones.
