A lack of anti-tetanus injections has affected Lahore, Punjab, causing problems for people injured in accidents.
Tetanus vaccine is included in the recommended immunisation schedule for both children and adults. It protects against tetanus, a bacterial ailment known as lockjaw.
Tetanus produces jaw tightness and severe muscle spasms. There is no cure, and 10% to 20% of those who develop it die.
Anti-tetanus shots
Anti-tetanus shots are in insufficient supply at both government and private institutions.
Injections are in short supply in pharmacies around the city, leaving many people without access to life-saving medical treatment.
Pharmaceutical Producers
The pharmaceutical producers have identified the international company’s production suspension as the cause of the scarcity.
The paucity of anti-tetanus injections has created significant challenges for persons injured in accidents, as prompt administration of the shot is critical to avoiding wound infection.
Medical experts stress that the injection should be given within 72 hours of the accident to successfully prevent bacterial infections.
Tetanus Vaccination Schedule
Children are routinely given five doses of the DTaP vaccination at two months, four months, six months, between 15 and 18 months, and between four and six years.
Then there’s one dosage of Tdap between the ages of 11 and 12, and a Td or Tdap booster every ten years.
