An Indian big religious crowd results in death toll

At least 27 Indian people died in a stampede in Uttar Pradesh. Many more got hurt, and the number might rise. Government doctors said this on Tuesday.

“We received 27 bodies so far. More are coming,” said Ram Mohan Tiwari. He is a senior medical officer in Uttar Pradesh.

People had gathered to celebrate the Hindu god Shiva. This happened in the city of Hathras. Hathras is 140 kilometers from New Delhi.

Umesh Kumar Tripathi is the chief medical officer. He said, “The dead are 25 women and two men.” He also said, “Many injured are admitted. The stampede happened during a religious event.”

Deadly accidents often happen at places of worship in India. This is common during big religious festivals.

In 2016, at least 112 people died. This happened after a big explosion from banned fireworks. It was at a temple during the Hindu new year. The blast hit concrete buildings and started a fire. Thousands of people were there in Kerala state.

In 2013, 115 people died in a stampede at a bridge. This happened near a temple in Madhya Pradesh. About 400,000 people were there. A rumor spread that the bridge would collapse. This caused the stampede.

In 2008, 224 pilgrims died in another stampede. This was at a hilltop temple in Jodhpur. More than 400 others got hurt.
