Instagram has launched a new function called ‘Amber Alert’ to help users become more aware of missing children in their area.
The function is now available in the United States and other countries.
The missing child’s picture, description, and location of the suspected abduction will be included in the notifications.
Users are encouraged to post the notice to help raise awareness so that the missing youngsters can be found through social media.
The director of trust and safety at Meta, Emily Vacher, says “We know that the chances of finding a missing child increase when more people are on the lookout, especially in the first few hours.
With this update, if an Amber Alert is activated by law enforcement and you are in the designated search area, the alert will now appear in your Instagram feed.”
According to Vacher’s blog, the alerts were “rare and unique to the search area,” and if individuals receive an alert through Instagram, it signifies a search for the missing youngster is already underway.
Amber Alert was launched by Facebook in 2015, while Google’s Search and Maps features were released in 2012, both of which are similar to Amber Alerts.
Instagram plans to use the user’s city, IP address, and location services to ensure that the notifications are appropriately targeted.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children collaborated on the update. The center’s president and CEO, Michelle DeLaune, stated, “We know that photos are a critical tool in the search for missing children and by expanding the reach to the Instagram audience, we’ll be able to share photos of missing children with so many more people.”
