Following an important decision by the higher education department, all government colleges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will now offer four-year Bachelor of Studies (BS) programs.
When asked about this major decision, education department officials told a local newspaper that previously, only 123 of 323 government colleges offered various BS programs. “Now all the remaining colleges will introduce BS programs in the larger interest of students,” the officials said.
It is worth noting that public sector universities in KPK charge significantly higher tuition than government colleges. Local students have applauded the decision, claiming that it will allow students from low-income families to continue their education.
The two-year Associate Degree program can no longer be offered due to the decision to expand BS programs to all colleges in the province. Students enrolled in two-year programs, on the other hand, will continue their studies until their degrees are completed.
Arshad Khan, Secretary Higher Education Department, stated that the decision was made because those with associate degrees have fewer opportunities to continue their education than those with BS degrees.
He went on to say that the higher education department is empowered to hire ad hoc teachers until the Public Service Commission recruits permanent teachers to address the need for more teachers following the implementation of BS programs in all colleges.
Furthermore, another department official stated that the associate degree program has a number of issues. One of the major issues is “its recognition as equal to BA/BSc because no such rules or law are framed to bring it at par with BA/BSc.”
