The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to reopen fixed local loop (FLL) licenses in the telecommunication regions of Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and Faisalabad after suspending FLL licenses in these areas on February 1, 2020, while keeping license applications open in ten other zones.
PTA has decided to reopen the licenses in light of the current market scenario and based on a bi-annual assessment of market absorption capacity.
Fixed local loop (FLL) licenses are granted by the PTA for the provision of fixed-line (voice and data) telecommunication services within a telecom region utilizing any media other than wireless. PTA began awarding FLL licenses in 2004, and there are now 195 license holders throughout Pakistan’s 14 telecom regions.
According to the PTA, certain companies also provide TV service, although they have no affiliation with the authority. A separate license from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) is required for TV service.
According to sources, enterprises must deliver fibre connections to a minimum of 200 people in order to obtain this license. PTA is now considering making it necessary for businesses to provide fibre access to at least 300 to 400 individuals. Better connection and new business opportunities will be aided by the PTA’s actions.
New corporations are keen in investing in this industry, according to PTA officials, because there are business potential in these four major telecom zones. The cost of a FLL license is $10,000, and it is valid for a period of 20 years.
