Storms, floods, and extreme weather events are displacing millions; droughts are destroying crops and creating water scarcity; and increasingly frequent wildfires are scorching the earth, according to a new United Nations study on climate change.
The research says that countries are not doing enough to combat climate change. One of the most difficult tasks is predicting what will happen if we do not take bolder, clever, and strategic action. But, even if all of the leaders agreed, where and how should they begin?
Limitations like these emphasize the need for an absolute understanding of climate science. Without a complete grasp of the planet’s interconnected processes, it’s impossible to make informed decisions, and which mitigation actions should be taken.
The Earth requires a time machine. Our time machine will be a digital twin of the Earth. Fortunately, employing artificial intelligence, rapid computing, and science, we now have the capabilities to make one.
Climate models have been developed by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) for decades. They require a supercomputer 1000 times more powerful than what they have to correctly predict the Earth’s climate, which includes the movement of clouds, storms, air and ocean currents, forests, grasslands, wildfires, and ice sheets.
NVIDIA has unveiled plans to create Earth-2, a digital replica of the Earth.
The company’s Omniverse platform would be combined with NVIDIA Modulus, an AI framework that is influenced by physics and learns from streaming data to anticipate the impact of climate change across an entire region. This technology, which is powered by a massive AI supercomputer, will allow the community to take a major step forward and precisely represent the Earth.
At its forthcoming GTC conference in March, the corporation is scheduled to deliver an update on the digital twin Earth system and climate science technologies.
