The Sindh government has taken a major step toward improving the 2013 Local Government Act. The primary goal is to increase salary for LG officials such as mayors, deputy mayors, and chairmen and vice chairmen of UCs.
According to the reports, the proposal includes a significant raise in salary for Mayors and Deputy Mayors of 100%. Sindh LG Secretary Najam Shah has scheduled the upcoming meeting of the Sindh Cabinet to discuss this crucial amending bill.
Notably, in July, the Sindh Cabinet adopted modifications to the Local Government Act designed to give mayors and UC chairmen more authority over LG institutions. With these changes, mayors in each provincial division and district now have the power to head their own development authorities.
An ex officio position on the Karachi Development Authority (KDA), Lyari Development Authority (LDA), and Malir Development Authority (MDA) will be given to the mayor of Karachi. In a similar vein, the mayor of Hyderabad will also preside over the HDA as its chairman.
Salary raise and other initiatives
The selection of the regional solid waste management chief executive is another important change. This official will be selected from among three finalists, and the relevant mayor will play an integral role in the deliberations. The Mayor of Karachi will also serve on the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) as an ex officio member. Additionally, the mayor will be consulted before appointing one of the three finalists as water board chief executive.
